MR2 Spyder ECU (piggyback)

A piggy-back fuel controller allows owners to modify their stock fuel injection system without replacing the entire ECU. These fuel controllers operate in different ways from modifying the injector duty cycle or modifying the input data to the ECU, causing it to deliver more or less fuel at a given RPM. With either method you’ll want to measure the results of any modifications you make to your fueling map. The fueling and ignition map is a large table of numbers that the ECU uses to determine injector pulse width and spark timing. It gets values from sensors and then looks it up in the fueling and ignition map to determine the it's final values.

Some piggy-back fuel controllers can't be programmed and will need to be completely replaced. However, you’ll still want to make a log before and after you add the piggy-back to evaluate the changes. This will help avoid dangerous lean conditions or wastefully rich conditions. If you can tune your piggy-back, use the LM-1 to carefully tune every cell of your fuel map.
